Limberlost Place: Paving the Way for Tall Mass Timber and Transforming Urban Landscapes

Overview

Limberlost Place at George Brown College will be North America’s tallest post secondary mass timber building, achieving net-zero carbon emissions. Located on the waterfront campus in Toronto, it will house the Schools of Architectural and Computer Studies. This innovative building has garnered over 20 national and international awards for design and innovation.

Phil Silverstein, Principal at Moriyama Teshima Architects, will discuss how this project has paved the way for mass timber construction in Toronto and beyond. Through public outreach, building tours, and open-source research, he will demonstrate how Limberlost Place contributes to sustainable solutions for large-scale academic projects and promotes industry knowledge sharing and research.

As an experienced Project Manager, Contract Administrator, Designer and Job Captain, Phil Silverstein’s exceptional project management ability has successfully tackled some of MTA’s most complex, fast-tracked, multi-phase renovation and expansion projects. Since joining the firm in 2001, Phil’s outstanding collaborative ability and highly efficient working style have been integral to delivering multifaceted projects such as Limberlost Place, Toronto Metropolitan University’s Centre for Urban Innovation, the University of Toronto Mississauga’s Innovation Complex, Victoria University’s Goldring Student Centre, and three projects for Humber College including their Athletic Centre, Student Welcome & Resource Centre, and the Centre for Entrepreneurship.

Consistently cultivating positive and effective work environments with large project and consultant teams, Phil’s affable yet clear and direct communication style, coupled with his extensive knowledge of building systems and technologies, help to ensure that projects retain their design integrity and are delivered according to schedule and budget. Having worked on a wide range of projects including commercial, office, sports and recreation, residential, religious, Government and educational projects, Phil has honed a strong skill set to translating client needs and building programmes into award winning projects
