Tour B: Sustainable Forestry, Nail-Laminated Timber Manufacturing, and Mass Timber Construction Site Tour

  • George Brown College 51 Dockside Drive Toronto, ON, M5A 1B6 Canada (map)

Overview

This full day tour will begin by taking participants to the Simcoe Forest for a discussion about sustainable forest management presented by Graeme Davis, a Registered Professional Forester with the County of Simcoe Forestry Department. The Simcoe County Forest is the largest and one of the most productive municipal forests in Ontario. After wrapping up at the forest, participants will head to SilvaSpan, a nearby mass timber manufacturing facility in New Lowell to see how Nail Laminated Timber (NLT) is produced and to tour the company’s new mass timber head office. Lunch will be provided here. The final visit on this full day tour is of a new master planned waterfront community called Brightwater currently under construction in Port Credit. Participants will see products fabricated at SilvaSpan used in this project.

NOTE: Participants will be required to bring and wear their own CSA approved safety footwear that covers the ankle (at least 6” tall). All other PPE (hard hat, high visibility vest, safety eyewear) will be provided. The tour will also involve climbing stairs and walking, sometimes over uneven ground, so participants are asked to make sure they are physically able to participate before registering.
